yoga-imageHormonal imbalances such as PMS, perimenopause, and menopause can cause roller coaster like symptoms ranging from mood swing moments, insomniac nights, and hot flash days. Good news comes to those who suffer, in the form of a yoga mat and as little as 15 minutes a day. Studies show that a specific sequence of yoga is effective in reducing insomnia and menopausal symptoms as well as improving quality of life.

Ageology caught up with some Chicago yoga experts for some insight on yoga for men and women over 40.

“Yoga is wonderful for everyone, regardless of age, and it definitely helps keep bodies healthy and resilient as they age. Restorative yoga is great for limited mobility and/or pain,” said Eden Newmark Studio Manager at TruHarmony Yoga.

A recent Yoga Journal article reported on some powerful and restorative yoga poses that helped women suffering from perimenopausal and menopausal like symptoms:

Supta Virasana (Reclining Hero Pose)
Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose)
Janu Sirsasana (Head-to-Knee Pose) with the head supported
