The Truth About Thyroid Imbalances in Men
Did you know your thyroid manages everything from sleep to weight to energy levels? A small gland in your neck produces hormones that impact many of your body’s functions--and many men are suffering from either overactive or underactive thyroids that are wreaking havoc on their health.
Thyroid imbalances are under diagnosed, according to the Society of Endrocrinologists, because standard testing ranges for thyroid hormone levels were inaccurate for many years. That means many men who were tested for thyroid imbalances in the past were misdiagnosed as “normal” even though suffering with symptoms of low thyroid.
The number of Americans diagnosed with thyroid imbalances has risen from about 5 million in 2007 to more than 200 million today--not because thyroid imbalances are necessarily rising but because references ranges have been broadened to account for many men who were previously diagnosed as suboptimal. By some estimates, as many as one in every seven adults is suffering from hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, is also a concern.
