Kozzi-matured_woman_in_healthy_lifestyle-312x416 (1) Anti-Aging Medicine, Age Management Medicine; it seems we hear these terms bandied about in the press and blogosphere more and more. But are they really that new and what do they really mean for you?

Recent medical breakthroughs in diet, exercise, nutrition, “vitamin” supplementation, and even hormone optimization have caught the interest of the public at large, the scientific community, and private industry alike.  It seems we are on the verge of a longevity renaissance. And I agree!

It turns out that Anti-Aging and Age Management in the mainstream vernacular are used interchangeably and actually live within the category of science-based medicine. Having practiced medicine in this area for many years now, I prefer to call it, “Rejuvenation Medicine”, because of the dramatic transformations that my patients have experienced.

In a first visit, I often get asked about hormone therapy; what is it and most importantly, is it safe?

I tell my women patients that they should not fear Bio-Identical Hormones. Not only are they safe but also they can be life saving. Recent studies confirm that when properly prescribed and applied, hormone replacement therapy in women decreases risks of heart disease, breast cancer (additional article resource) and osteoporosis. Previous studies also showed decreases in colon cancer and other chronic diseases. Bio-Identical Hormone therapy is the most effective treatment for pre and post-menopausal symptoms, which can be debilitating.

Likewise, men should not fear Testosterone Replacement Therapy. In the last month alone, several new studies were published confirming the relationships between low testosterone and diabetes, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Hundreds of previous studies confirmed benefits in multiple other chronic diseases.  In previous decades, the risk most often cited with Testosterone Replacement Therapy was an increased risk of prostate cancer. This has been completely disproven in the last 10 years and more recent studies have indicated that prostate cancer is more likely to develop in men with lower testosterone levels.

Hormone Optimization Therapy, when indicated, is important, but is only one piece of the strategy for rejuvenation and feeling 20 to 30 years younger. Equally important are “Attention to Diet”, “Breathless Exercise” and “Complete Supplementation”. In fact, these all work synergistically to achieve the best possible results.

  • A healthy diet is critical for optimal health and optimal hormone functioning.  The best diet is not a diet at all, but being fully aware of what you are eating, and how to avoid poisons and sources of inflammation in your foods.
  • Breathless Exercise” is about exercising in the most effective way. If you do this you will spend less than 15 minutes every other day to shred fat, build muscle, improve heart and lung performance, and enjoy the full benefits of exercise. Too many people spend too much time doing the wrong exercise – and actually increase their body fat rather than decreasing it.
  • Vitamin and mineral supplementation is a must in the modern world.  Reports published in the last year have confirmed an alarming trend – the vitamins and nutrients in our food supply have been drastically diminished. For example, new strains of corn have been shown to contain less than two percent of very important minerals such as calcium and magnesium. This is also true for many other vegetables and fruits.  A good, potent, complete multivitamin and mineral supplement is essential to combat these deficiencies.  However, consult an anti-aging physician because choosing your supplements, because the wrong supplements can do more harm than good.

The best approach to rejuvenation combines all of the above.  I enjoy hearing my patients describe feeling better than they have in decades; energized, less fat, more muscle, best sex in their lives, no more pain, more effective at work, happier, off prescription medications and better sleep.  The best part is that blood tests and other indicators typically show major reductions in risk (sometimes as much as 80-90%) of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease and macular degeneration.

Live your life to the fullest and ENJOY!
